I like to think about who may have owned my vintage clothing before it came into my hands. Usually it's pure conjecture, but with this vintage letter sweater, I have a name. Harv Adams. He played basketball. Or baseball. I'm not not a sporty sort and can't tell what the ball on the big letter "A" is supposed to represent. He was either tiny or maybe...not in high school? Because this sweater is small. Other than that, I know either he was in the class of '60 or he was number 60 on whatever team he played on and he went to A-something school. Then, we get to start guessing. I think he played basketball and he was really tall and skinny. He was kind of shy and although he wasn't the star player, he was good. He liked academics and hoped to study at a good school. What do you think Harv Adams was like? And do you make up stories about your clothes' previous owners?

I bought this coat last year but never had a chance to wear it. Honestly, I doubt I'll wear it more than once a year but I just couldn't pass it up at the thrift store. How often do you find and floor length, soft pink, wool coat with fur collar and cuffs. Actually, it looks like the fur was added at home, but it's soft and warm and lovely. It reminds me of something a Russian princess would wear. Of course I had to wear red lipstick. Unfortunately, we were losing the light while taking these pictures and I didn't get a full length shot. It really is a fabulous coat.

I'm back!

To me, early fall is one of the best times for vintage. There's the always awesome back to school vibes, the nostalgia of the summer ending, falling leaves, it's all kind of dreamy. And I love fall clothes and colors, mustard and knits and corduroy and gray and all those lovely things. Later in fall, like now (these were taken in early/mid September if I remember correctly), I start feeling more gothy. My grays turn from soft to deep charcoal and start getting paired with blacks and I start wearing dark lipstick again. Unfortunately, I seem to miss the best of this season, the early fall, each year. I jump too quickly into the dark late fall, which is really unavoidable after daylight savings time ends. This year especially, since I didn't have a camera for much of it (I'm now borrowing my stepdad's, until he notices and asks for it back), I feel like I missed.

But I had a few good days, and a few good outfits. I had many more outfit ideas that I didn't get around to using, but hopefully next year I will really grab onto that month and a half period of loveliness. This dress is new, I found it while shopping in Seattle with my cousin and his english wife. They were only here for a day, so I took them to Pike Place Market and Capitol Hill. We came home to meet my parents for dinner at the Grange, which is a lovely restaurant with really fresh, seasonal, and local food. (Do excuse the wonkiness of this photo, I think my cousin was trying to be arty.)

I bought this skirt awhile back. The high quality construction in an obviously homemade garment made me happy. At first I had no idea what I would wear it with, since pastel colors generally aren't my style. But everything works with this vintage Depeche Mode shirt, because everything works with awesome. Wore the outfit to work, and got a lot of compliments, especially on the red lipstick. And for once I got a picture outdoors again! Here's hoping that continues, since it's so much nicer with natural light.

Sorry once again about the scarcity of posts lately. I've been working crazy hours lately. I work six days in a row next week. All full eight hour shifts. I'm also housesitting that week. I think I will die.

Wow, I didn't realize how much of this outfit was thrifted! I just got this skirt the other day in the vintage section of my local Value Village (I thought I would hate it when they created the vintage section because I was worried they would start charging more for the good stuff, but it's still as cheap as ever and it's nice having a starting place with a higher ratio of good to bad). I actually changed into jeans after wearing this for a little while because Justina and I made MARSHMALLOWS and I didn't want to get the goo all over this nice wool skirt.

I also got to see Michael and Amanda that night, and we rented Moon which was REALLY good. You should watch it!

Sandblast Day 2

Sunday less of my friends were hanging out at Sandblast, but Tommy did come by and we explored a little down by the river. I had to leave a little early (obviously not early enough) to go to the No Doubt concert.





I've really been liking red lipstick lately. I'm not sure why, usually I'm more about heavy eyeliner, but nice red lips are just about my favorite thing ever these days. I like it when it's perfect, and I also like it when it's a little messy, and I love using stains that make it look like you've been eating strawberries or popsicles all day. In this picture I'm wearing an "Illuminating Lip Lacquer" by Physician's Formula in "Retro Red." It's sort of like a gloss, except pretty long-wearing and highly pigmented, but it doesn't dry out your lips like some long-wearing lip colors do. Also, it's shiny all on it's own, so you don't need a second gloss on top of it.



I took some photos with the Yashica while I was at Sandblast. I'm starting to like using it a little more, although I wish my lenses from the Minolta worked with it as well. But I'm starting to like the style of light meter it uses, which I used to hate, because you don't have to turn the camera on or off, just press a button to check the exposure. I'll definitely put those up when I get the film developed.

I finally took good pictures while wearing this dress! Oh man, it's like my favorite dress ever. It's soooo nineties, with the small floral and the short skirt and it's just perfect. The princess seams and lacing in the back make it fit so well and the skirt is wonderfully full. Which, as I've mentioned before, is a hazard on windy days, but it twirls so perfectly. I want to go swing dancing in this dress, except I don't know how to swing dance.

foodie digressions

Oh my goodness, I had the most delicious dinner. I made a pot roast with delicious carmelized onions, baked potatoes, and brussel sprouts and now I'm waiting for some homemade butterscotch pudding to chill. I have been on such a huge cooking kick these days. I used to only cook more asian or other "ethnic" foods but I've been focusing a lot of traditional foods. Lots of meat and potatoes type meals. I've also been obsessed with spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and parsnips. And soup, oh my gosh am I obsessed with soup. I bake a chicken about once a week and use the carcass to make stock. Split pea, lentil, butternut squash, potato leek, all sorts of things. These simple dishes are so satisfying, I'm surprised it's taken me this long to learn how to cook these things.

I'm on spring break right now and I stayed home today, so this is what I wore to clean, do laundry, and cook the tasty meal I was jizzing in my pants over up there. I started cleaning up the kitchen while I was cooking and went a little insane. I scrubbed down our disgusting stove hood (oh my god, the grease was so bad) and that took a few house. I smashed my thumb which hurts to type now, but it looks so much better. I have some more to do tomorrow, but it's looking good.

Yesterday I picked Justina up from work at two and we met Amanda in Seattle. She had to pick her dad and brother up from the airport at seven and didn't want to go home after school. I wore this sweet sweater vest J gave me a few years ago and my corduroys, and a jacket I bought in Australia. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures. I even, unusually, wore my glasses and heels! Oh well. We got lunch and went shopping. I bought a really sweet silk tank top that has a really great shape and details at a vintage shop. I also stopped by the thrift store on my way home, and got an ugly suede skirt which will be turned into something AWESOME, just you wait and see.

This dress used to be my mom's. I'm not sure how old it is, but she wore it while she was pregnant with me and before, when she was a total hippie. It's been hanging in the back of my closet for years because I just didn't know how to wear it. I'm pretty happy with the outfit I put together here. The belt buckle was my grandmother's, she gave it to me a few years ago when she was getting rid of some stuff. I put it on a nice brown leather belt I stole from my stepdad. He never wore it. It had a big western style buckle on it before.

Unfortunately the buckle broke while I was at school, but I think I might be able to fix it. So on my way home I stopped at the thrift store to look for a replacement. I got a braided leather belt. I like the wide belt with the big buckle better, but this works too. I also got a pretty silk scarf and a red plaid flannel shirt from the little boys section.

My hair has gotten so long. I rarely wear it down because it's so difficult to do anything with, but it was sort of working today, so I did. But I really need to get it cut. Also, I have ugly roots that need taken care of. I can't decide though if I want to dye it dark like my natural color or light like the rest of it.
