polka pants

shirt - target, pants - macy's, boots - modcloth

I'm sorry guys, but these pants and boots are a sign things are about to get really boring around here on the What Rachel Wore side of things. I know, I know, it doesn't seem like polka dot pants and bright green suede boots could possibly be boring, but they are when you wear them nearly every day as I have for the last two weeks. It's awful but I just can't take them off. They make me too happy and it's too easy to make an interesting outfit when two major pieces are already totally cray-cray. I can put literally anything on my top half and it will look cool. I promise you.

I obviously really dig the pattern mixing possibilities with these pants, as this is the very first way I wore them. No easing into crazy patterned pants for me, thank you very much. I went shopping with J because while I was housesitting I discovered that my last pair of work appropriate pants had developed an unfortunate hole on the inner thigh, rendering them...less appropriate. I picked up a pair of very sensible black Levi's that fit rather well but had an itchy tag that had to be taken out with a seam ripper but these were my prize. I am so completely loving them, especially with these crazy boots from Modcloth. I'm still thinking about getting them in red...

clearcut path to nothing at all

I don't care what happens, this skirt will always be the one that a particular boy liked me best in. Some garments become attached to certain memories and can't be separated. I don't think that's a bad thing though. I like the way I can remember things I felt or did just by pulling on a dress or a pair of shoes. I don't think I'm romanticizing anything. The boy always was and is bad news and when he pays a compliment it's not sweet at all. But sometimes I like to remember disgusting things idiot friends say to me.

Never skip wearing a skirt because you're a day or two past needing to shave your legs. No one is paying that much attention and you're more likely to be noticed because of your cute skirt than your stubbly legs. If anyone says anything, don't bother telling them you're making a feminist statement or conserving resources (unless of course you are). Just tell them that it's none of their damn business how often you shave your legs, because it IS none of their damn business how often you shave your legs.

thrifting time

I've been thinking about doing a series of posts on thrifting. I'm really just in the gathering my thoughts stage of that right now, but I want to branch out and visit different thrift stores and write up what I consider the most useful tips and tricks for scoring at the thrift store. I fall in and out of the habit of thrifting and I feel like I'm about to start a major re-dedication to the good deal.

These were taken the last time I went to my lovely local Value Village, which I often stop at before or after work. Everything I am wearing, minus tights, glasses, and umbrella, is thrifted and I think they were all purchased at the Redmond Value Village. Not bad, eh? I have used that backpack to death this summer, camping, hiking, any time I'm going to be outdoors or need a change of clothes basically. The boots are staple for me, and have almost been worn to death. I'm looking to replace them because they are on their last legs but I'm pretty sure I've had them for at least three years. The dress is a little nineties floral thing, something that can always be found for cheap at a well-stocked thrift store. I've picked up many of them and they are versatile. And the jacket, boy that was a score. Vintage Levi's denim jacket, all beat to shit all ready. I love the crap out of this thing and have added considerable wear to an already well-loved garment. It's amazing how easy it is to put together an all thrifted outfit when probably half your wardrobe comes from the charity shop.

rainy day writing

Awhile back I spent a rainy afternoon at my parents house typing and reading poetry. I copied some favorite lines to use in an art journaling project and enjoyed the click clack of the keys with the softer patter of the rain. It was soothing and good, a time to rest from the whirlwind of stuff going through my life and my head. On the surface things are calm but lately I've been boiling underneath. I care a lot more than I let on.

georgetown

tee - depeche mode concert, skirt - thrifted, tights - target, denim jacket - thrifted, moccasins - minnetonka, bag - thrifted, earrings - handmade

I found a bunch of older pictures I forgot to post this summer. These are from when I first moved into my new place (I promise once I get curtains/clean up, I'll show off my room), back in June. They were taken while exploring Georgetown, the artsy neighborhood a short walk from my more boring home base. The dilapidated buildings down there are some of my favs and have actually made at least one previous appearance on the blog.

bathing beauty

bathing suit - j.crew, sunglasses - target

Let's look back and think about summer. Pretend for just a moment that it's still hot and gorgeous. Spending the day at the beach is an option. The possibilities are endless. There are boys to flirt with and cocktails to drink. Socks are unnecessary but painted toenails are.

I spent my birthday this year at the beach and then made grilled pizza for some friends and my roommates. I'm so glad I got a chance to wear this totally amazing retro suit. It is my absolute favorite and last year I didn't go swimming at all. Which is a travesty.

I've really busy lately, but I did squeeze in an end of summer roadtrip and I'll be sure to share pictures of that soon, as well as some older stuff I forgot to post. I haven't been home much these last couple weeks, between travel and housesitting, so my computer/internet access has been spotty. As always, apologies for the irregular posting.
