like a hippy dippy art teacher

shirt - forever 21, necklace - africa, jeans - pacsun, shoes - vans, socks - rei, paintbrush keeping my hair up

I wore this on Thursday, when I went to see Eugene Mirman do a reading at the University Bookstore. So funny. If you're not familiar with him, you should definitely check him out. I went with J and Gary was there too, so that was cool.

The shirt is actually my mom's. The necklace is this gorgeous strand of handmade glass beads from Ghana. I have some family whose ancestors came from Ghana and they lived there for awhile. I got the necklace from them. The beads are translucent red with opaque white swirls/stripes. They're very rectangular in shape and I like the sound they make when you rub two beads together. I also like how the beads warm up as you wear the necklace; when you first put it on they're shockingly cold, but they warm up throughout the day and when you take it off at night they hold the heat for quite awhile.

I was definitely feeling a sort of art teacher vibe, though I'm not sure where that came from, on Thursday. I actually wore something different to school, but I didn't take a picture of that.

stay gold ponyboy, stay gold

jeans - pacsun, shoes - converse, shirt - pacsun, leather jacket - vintage

This outfit I wore yesterdy. It was inspired by The Outsiders. It's been one of my favorite books for years, and the movie is fantastic as well. I actually really need to reread the book, as it's been quite awhile. But I had my jeans cuffed, which always reminds me of The Outsiders, so I decided to use that as inspiration for an outfit.

I'm actually not sure if they actually cuffed their jeans in the book, or if they wore converse, but that combination always says Outsiders to me. Also, their shirts were much tighter than this, but I think a looser shirt works better for a girl. On a boy, I would expect a skintight t-shirt. On a girl, a tight shirt actually seems LESS authentic than a tight one, even though the opposite is true. I also thought about rolling a pack of cigarettes in my sleeve but decided that would be too costumey.

I actually got this leather jacket from a guy I went to high school with. It was his ex-girlfriend's, and I think he just wanted to get rid of the memories. I was wearing it during class one day and he said I could just have it. I don't wear it much since it's pretty big on me, but once I decided to do an Outsides outfit, I knew I needed to dig it out.

wild things

sweater - target, shirt - urban outfitters, jeans - pacsun, shoes - vans

I have a confession. I wear my pants several times before washing them. Do you think that's gross? I don't. Shirts are different, I wouldn't wear a shirt a second day in a row. I generally wash jeans when they're getting too baggy to tighten them back up, or when I actually spill something on them or wipe food on them while I'm cooking. I feel that it saves water and electricity to wear them over and over again. I wear a jeans a lot, so if I only wore a pair of jeans once before washing them, I'd need to have so many pairs, or I'd be doing laundry practically every other day. Anyways, how many days do you wear your jeans before washing them? Do you alternate between a few pairs?

Personally, I alternate between a few pairs and wash them after they've been been worn about the equivalent of a week. I've worn them for longer periods of time as a sort of challenge, or when I'm camping.

On another subject, have you heard about the Where the Wild Things Are movie that's in the works? It's directed by Spike Jonze and looks like it's going to be FANTASTIC. Not all wussified like so many kids movies are these days. Check out the pictures on the IMDb page.

Man, there is some intense moss and stuff growing on my porch. That's Seattle (area) for you.

who needs boys when you have best friends?

Valentine's Day has never been a big deal for me. I mean, I like candy and chocolate and other sweets, and I like cuteness and all, but it's always been pretty unimportant. I have enjoyed the past few years, spending the day with my similarly single friend, Amanda. I have been wanting to see Coraline ever since the I saw the previews for it, but I wasn't sure it was actually going to be good until I read a review the other day and it sounded amazing. Since Amanda was also interested, we saw it today. And it was good. Really good. Excellent story and it was beautiful. So so beautiful. I absolutely love that style of animation. It makes me want to make strange little dolls and make odd little films with them.

Anyways, after I did some gross construction work this morning (so so dusty), I felt like dressing somewhat cute for the occasion. I think I ended up looking like a five year old, but oh well. Also, once again, check out how long that hair is. Ridiculous.

shirt - urban outfitters, jeans - pacsun, earrings - gift

I really do like this shirt, but I think I need to wear it with something else. As I wore it today, it's so boring. It doesn't really feel like me.

Obviously the pink and hearts were for Valentine's day, but I also painted my nails (very rare these days) a bright pink and wore a barrette with roses on it in my hair.

nails - shining heart (sinful colors), barrette - handmade vintage

(I used a downloadable software called Poladroid to get the polaroid effect on those pictures. It's fun, you should try it.)

I hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day, however you chose to celebrate it (or not).

sleepy, lazy days

shirt - vintage, sweatshirt - american eagle, jeans - pacsun

I totally didn't want to get up and go to school today but I had to. This is a go-to sleepy/lazy outfit. Jeans and a band shirt. This one I bought on ebay about a year ago. Depeche Mode is actually one of my favorite bands. I've been loving KEXP's documentary series "Pop Goes Electronic." They mention Depeche Mode, which of course makes me happy, but I'm especially glad to have found out about one of the originals of the genre, Kraftwerk. I'll definitely be checking them out.

I would have much preferred staying at home in my pjs all day today.

shirt - rolling stones concert tee, long johns

I took this last night after I got out of the shower. I got the shirt a few years ago when my dad took me to a Rolling Stones concert. My cat, Jack, was being really cute and cuddling with me and I took a bunch of pictures of her.

projectssss

I have bunches of things on my mind that I want to make or do.

I want to knit a slouchy grey wool cable knit hat. Something sort of like this:

but I think I'll do different cables. I'm planning on just making up the pattern as I go. I've never knit a hat and I've never knit cables but it really dousn't seem like it'll be too hard.

I want to finish this painting:

You may recognize it from one of my pictures from photo 1, in which my friend was pretending to paint it. I started it ages ago but haven't gotten around to finishing it up.

I want to make some slouchy menswear style pants using this pattern:

I'm thinking of finding some giant men's pants at the thrift store, made of a nice fabric and big enough that I have plenty of room to work with and turning them into lovely pants like those. There were also some Anthropologie pants I loved a few years ago that were high waisted trousers with a big sash and bow and I wish I could find a picture of those.

I need to get my hair cut. I want it cut like Linda Ronstadt:

So so adorable. My mom promised she'd pay for me to get my hair cut for Christmas, but we haven't done that yet. She's going to make me an appointment at the salon my friend goes to (they use all organic products and are really cool) on Friday, so hopefully my hair will be gorgeous soon! I was considering dreading it, which I have always wanted to do and definitely will do some day, but I decided I want pretty hair right now. Locks don't really go with a lot of styles I'm interested in wearing and I don't feel like limiting myself right now.

By the way, I just added a list of blogs I read to the sidebar over there. --> There's a lot of really great blogs on the list and I think they're all amazing. I am inspired by such a huge range of styles and I think you can see that in the blogs I love. They're all so wonderful in their own special ways.

perfectly imperfect

shirt - thrifted, jeans - express, shoes - converse

This is the shirt I bought yesterday at the thrift store. As I said, it's a little boys shirt which fit me perfectly, as long as I'm ok with 3/4 length sleeves instead of full length ones. I'm really happy with this shirt. I'll definitely be looking for more flannel in the little boys section. This one was only $2.

I'm working on a photography project with the Holga right now. It's my first time shooting medium format and so far I love it. The toy-ness of the camera is so much fun too. I love shooting with a piece of crap. Ha.

victorian-ish sleeves on a hippy dress

Hello.

dress - vintage, belt - my stepdad's, belt buckle - vintage, tights - dkny, shoes - bucco

This dress used to be my mom's. I'm not sure how old it is, but she wore it while she was pregnant with me and before, when she was a total hippie. It's been hanging in the back of my closet for years because I just didn't know how to wear it. I'm pretty happy with the outfit I put together here. The belt buckle was my grandmother's, she gave it to me a few years ago when she was getting rid of some stuff. I put it on a nice brown leather belt I stole from my stepdad. He never wore it. It had a big western style buckle on it before.

belt - thrifted

Unfortunately the buckle broke while I was at school, but I think I might be able to fix it. So on my way home I stopped at the thrift store to look for a replacement. I got a braided leather belt. I like the wide belt with the big buckle better, but this works too. I also got a pretty silk scarf and a red plaid flannel shirt from the little boys section.

coat - old navy

My hair has gotten so long. I rarely wear it down because it's so difficult to do anything with, but it was sort of working today, so I did. But I really need to get it cut. Also, I have ugly roots that need taken care of. I can't decide though if I want to dye it dark like my natural color or light like the rest of it.

random outfits

sweatshirt - american apparel, shirt - urban outfitters, jeans - pacsun, scarf - handknit gift, shoes - converse, bag - old navy

socks - handknit by my grandma for christmas

I wore this outfit on a day I needed some cheering up and an energy boost. All the bright colors did it perfectly. (Even my underwear were purple and my bra pink.) My grandma knit these awesome socks for me for Christmas. They're like the most comfy awesome warm socks ever. I love them.

sweater - thrifted uniqlo, shirt - can't remember, corduroys - delia's, shoes - converse

This was a lazy-ish day outfit. I had to go to school, but I didn't want to go. These pants are super comfortable and the sweater is cozy, so I felt better.
