skipping in the park

sweater - icelandica, tshirt - pacsun, skirt - old, socks - target, boots - seychelles, purse - thrifted dooney & burke, glasses - zenni optical

This is another in my series of super lady-like outfits I wore after returning from Europe. And now you can finally see the sweater from Iceland better. I really adore it, and I think I'll get a lot more use out of it next winter/fall. It's starting to get too warm for it, since the wool is incredibly thick and warm. This is also a better view of the lace-up boots I bought awhile back. They are exactly like the ones my grandma had in the sixties and I love them. I'm pretty sure I talked about them before, but you can see them better in these pictures.

I took these pictures in a local park awhile ago. I met a friend for coffee and then went to the park by myself and sat by the river and read a book. It was lovely. This is something I never used to do. I was really bad at spending time by myself and would never really go out if I didn't have someone to hang out with. But after my adventures in solo travel, which involved a lot of doing things on my own, I have discovered I like spending time by myself.

I can't figure out what I want to do with my hair these days! I sort of accidentally started growing out my bangs when I didn't have time to get them cut before leaving and then they got too long while I was away. Now I'm mostly pinning them back and occasionally doing this side swept thing but I'm not sure if I actually want to grow them out. I do rather like this braid thing I did, but I kind of miss my blunt bangs. Thoughts?

summer camp counselor

pocket tee - gap, shorts - thrifted, shoes - old, bag - thrifted, silk scarf - childhood dress up box, sunglasses - thrifted

Wow, this is a pretty heavily thrifted outfit. Which I didn't even realize until I started writing the post. It also features three new items. I found the mini picnic basket awhile back, I think sometime in the winter. I knew I'd have to wait for the summer, but I'm SO glad I bought it. I bought the shorts more recently. Um, never thought I would love pleated, high waisted, cuffed, khaki shorts so much. But I do. The sunglasses are new from the thriftstore as well, but I'll talk about them sometime I get a better picture. You really can't see them well. The day I wore this, I was thinking about summer camp a lot. I went to a few different camps as a kid, both sleep away and day camps. I want to roast marshmallows and sing campfire songs. I think I look like a summer camp counselor, except, you know, wearing heels. Which were actually insanely comfortable. Thank you low-ish wedges! I like being able to walk long distances and run.

Instead, I'll leave you with a picture of my dear friend looking AMAZING in her mom's high waisted denim shorts from the 70s. Doesn't get more authentically vintage than that. Stealing clothes from your mom is the best thing because you realize that hey, she might have been cool once. Or maybe still is. Also, here's a picture of me with a mexican blanket worn like a cape from the same day. Kinda goofy.

toking up with the pops

A few weeks ago I went to Seattle with my friend Shiloh, who was home from Bellingham for the weekend, to visit our friend Shane.

This is Shane.

This is Shiloh.

We had a really fun night, eating Indian food and staying up ridiculously late hanging out in his dorm room, before going for a rambling, random walk and getting donuts, and then sleeping on his dorm room floor until 2 pm. When we finally got up, we headed to the Ave, where the U District Street Fair was going on. Wandering around, we stopped and watched a street performer. Of course, he ended up pulling Shane and Shiloh into his act.

He made them into a human table, stood on top of them, and juggled swords! It was crazy. They and the two other guys he pulled out of the crowd were really uncomfortable about putting their heads in each other's laps. Silly homophobes. We stopped by Neptune Music (my favorite record store in the U District) while we were waiting for Amanda who, after calling me while she was supposed to be studying, decided to come meet us. We figured it would be easier for her to find us at the record store than if we were wandering around on the street in the middle of all the crowds. While we were waiting for her, I found a Country Joe and the Fish album, which I bought. (They're a band from the sixties that played at my house. Crazy story.) After she showed up, we went wandered a bit, bought popsicles and walked to a park. We sat in the grass and enjoyed our popsicles and then took over the swingset.

This is the craziest picture. Look closely. I didn't notice it the first couple times I looked at it. See it? Yeah, Shiloh is swinging high enough that it looks like he's standing on Shane's shoulders. I think it's so cool.

I wish I had a picture of Shiloh's shirt. It's an awesome old Dr. Dre shirt. We were joking about how nineties we both were, him in his Dr. Dre shirt, and me with my flannel, grungey and hole-filled jeans, and my little brown leather purse my mom actually used in the nineties. Oh, and we both had sweaters/sweatshirts tied around our hips the night before.

After hanging out in the park, we ended up in West Seattle at a barbecue with my dad's friends. It was really cool to see my friends interacting with the type of people I grew up around. I think it's great when younger people and older people can get along and have fun together and that's definitely how this went. They also had some delicious food. But the best part was definitely that my awkward friends were able to talk to these aging hippies and they all liked each other. Even my dad thought my friends were alright, and they thought he was pretty cool.

By the way, finals are next week, so I'm going to busy and probably won't be posting much. Not that I post much anyways, but for the next week or so I'll have an excuse. I still have pictures from the last couple weeks to post but right now I'm not wearing anything interesting.

homework in the park

I've been spending a lot of time in parks lately, apparently. Couple weeks ago, Amanda and I went to the park in town to work on homework. We didn't get a whole lot of work done, but it was sunny and pleasant.

We blew and made wishes on dandelions.

And made daisy chains.

And I danced in the grass like the hippie I am.

picnic in a park

So these are some not so exciting pictures from quite awhile back, when I skipped class to go have a picnic in the park by my school with Justina and Liam. It was right after Liam got back from touring, so it was really cool to hang with them both. I hadn't seen him in several months. Now I think he'll be gone for awhile again, which is kind of a bummer. But this afternoon was really really fun.

(yeah, I look drunk)

I've got several more posts, both old and new lined up for the next couple days. Lots of great pictures from Sasquatch, which was awesome by the way (I'll probably talk more about bands than clothes), and I still need to show you my photos from last quarter.

cutoffs and cocktails

I know it's been a long time since I've written. First, I'd like to mention for those of you who've been reading and have heard about my friend Alex, who is in the hospital, that she is doing much better. She is either going into rehab for 50 days or going home in the next week. I visited a few days ago and she has a lot more use of her arms and legs and her spirits are much better. It was really happy.

Anyways, on Friday my friend Aly and her roommates had a party with a required dresscode of cutoff jean shorts. Justina and I went into Seattle earlier in the afternoon because we wanted to catch this band playing at Cafe Vita, but unfortunately we missed them. We met up with Amanda and hung out in the park for hours. The weather was gorgeous.

Our weather has been beautiful for the past few days. Today I even put on my bathing suit and laid out in the sun for awhile. I also went for a lovely walk with Justina and her mom down by the river and did some gardening. I'm trying to grow more herbs this year. And my mom is growing lots of veggies. Tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, cabbage, and I don't know what else. God, I love gardens. I love in the summer going out right before dinner is ready to pick some lettuce and tomatoes for a quick salad.

The park was great people watching on Friday. I'm not sure what this park is called, but it's the one on Capitol Hill with the fountain. I took some pictures there for Beginning Photo. (Which reminds me, I still haven't picked up my work from last quarter. I'll post that once I get it.) There was a girl teaching a hula hoop class, a group of little kids rolling down the hill, some people flying kites, and a group of hipsters with a boombox getting high. Among others. Those were just the people immediately surrounding us.

Once we got sick of the park (after several hours) we headed to the U District to meet up with Shane. He still didn't have his cutoffs for that night, so we walked to Goodwill and helped him pick out some jeans. (He so doesn't know how to shop in a thrift store. It was really funny to see him slowly going through the rack, not even in his size. I had to take over for him, and we basically picked out the jeans for him. They had a pretty hilarious Aztec looking tag on the waistband.) Then we got some food at Memo's (a Mexican fast food place on the Ave, it's cheap and usually good but don't get the enchiladas) and went back to Shane's dorm to eat and help him make his cutoffs.

After all this, the party itself was less awesome than the rest of the day. It was fun, but there was some drama with some people that weren't supposed to be there that everyone hated, and some guy kicked a hole in the wall. (I've offered to try to patch it for them, since I have some drywall experience.) Everyone's cutoffs were pretty nice. I was impressed with how short most of the guys were willing to go, but then again, there were several gay dudes there. Even Shane didn't wuss out and make them too long. Mine were pretty long, but whatever. I'm glad I didn't make them gross short like so many girls wear them. Totally not me.

These particular shorts I actually made several years ago, on the way to Eastern Washington to go camping with some friends. I think we were somewhere across the mountains when we stopped at a rest stop. I was way too hot, so I chopped off the legs of my jeans in the parking lot. There were actually two others at the party who were pretty much my exact twins. Cutoffs, duh, but also red flannels. One was Aly's roommate Becky, and the other was our friend Gary. Both were quite drunk, ha, while I was not.
